Nerds and geeks come in many varieties. Sports geeks, Bible
Nerds, even self-professed nerds like Angry Video Game Nerd, Black Nerd, and
Bronies.
As much as nerds have become more and more
proud of who they are and how they express heir fandom, there are two
universals these actions have yet to defeat, despite trying: bullying.
You didn't read that wrong, there are just
two types. Nerds are going to be bullied. Human aggression and
ostracization of what we don't like, understand, or just want to insult in an
erroneous idea that it makes us look better happens. It's a problem that does
need to be dealt with and not always personally.
Reformed bullies, victims, and anyone who
has to deal with bullies will all agree, both personally and objectively that
these are horrible actions.
As bullying becomes more notable, so does
a more sinister aspect of geekdom. What drove people away from
acknowledging the cries of geeks and nerds was the distaste for the people: the
cliches of the unwashed, diseased, socially inept, and sexually frightening.
Now the same is surfacing, but in a more realistic and uncomfortable
form.
While still more noticed by geeks and
nerds themselves, the effect is still just as uncomfortable and frightening, if
not more. Bullies are again everywhere, but now they are and have always
been within. Nerds and geeks are using the tools they felt they have been
wrong with against each other for reasons most of the world has grown out of
legally, not just in terms of maturity, which shows the course of action that
now needs to be taken.
Geeks and nerds that decry gays ruin not
only marriage but their games, genres, and stories deserve as much as those
waving signs on the street only moreso. Maybe if you want some help, you should stop being a jerk first. Perhaps if you didn't cause the same kind of problem you needed to be rescued from, this would be easier on everyone.
If you're not part of the problem, thank you. Everyone else, please grow up. You know who you are, and so does everyone who doesn't deserve what you do to them.
